A product group is a collection of items from your catalog that can be promoted with shopping ads.

You can use the auto-created and suggested product groups we create for you, or you can create your own product groups. And if your business is on Shopify, you can link your Shopify account to Pinterest to create product groups from collections.

Before you get started

Since product groups are tied to your data source, you’ll need to add a data source before you can create product groups.

Auto-created product groups

We automatically create some product groups for you. These product groups are updated once per day and will say "Auto created for you" below the product group name.

Auto-created product group Description Max number of products
All Products All products in your latest successful feed upload No limit
Top Sellers Products with the highest conversion rate (if you have the conversion tag installed) Limited to 1,000 products
Back In Stock Products that were previously out of stock and are now in stock Limited to 1,000
Best Deals Products with the deepest drop in price Limited to 1,000 products
New Arrivals Products that are new to your catalog Limited to 1,000 products
Most Popular Products that are resonating most with people on Pinterest, based on engagement Limited to 1,000 products
Suggested product groups

There are suggested product groups you can add as well. These are created based on the items in your product feed and are updated every 24 hours.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account from your desktop
  2. Click the hamburger icon at the top-left of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Catalogs and product groups
  4. Click Product groups from the left-side menu
  5. From the top-right of your screen, select a Data source
  6. Click Create product group, then select Using suggested product groups
  7. Select the suggested product groups you want to use
  8. Click Save
Create your own product groups

When you create your own product groups, you’ll use filters to select similar products and group them together by type, availability, brand, category, price, and more.

We recommend naming your product groups based on the filters you select. Keep in mind that people on Pinterest will be able to see your product group name.

Product type Custom label Product group name
Example 1 Dresses Bestselling Bestselling dresses
Example 2 Graphic tees New arrivals Graphic tees - New

To use a specific filter, make sure the corresponding field exists in your data source. If the field does not exist, is not filled in, or has been removed, you’ll be unable to use the filter to create a product group.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account from your desktop.
  2. Click the hamburger icon at the top-left of the page.
  3. Under Ads, click Catalogs and product groups.
  4. Click Product groups from the left-side menu.
  5. From the top-right of your screen, select a Data source.
  6. Click Create product group.
  7. Select Create manually from the drop-down menu.
  8. Enter a Product group name.
  9. Click Filters to select products for your product group.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to All to select which filters to match products to.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to Item ID to view all available filters and select which one to use.
      • Note: If you select Price from the list, you’ll be able to choose a currency. You can only select one currency per product group.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to Includes to select either Includes or Excludes.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to Select or search filter to select which products to include or exclude from your filter.
  10. Click Apply filter and the filtered products will appear in a list below.
  11. Click Add filter to apply additional filters.
  12. Click Create product group.
Avoid product group overlap

When you’re creating a new product group, it’s best to avoid including products that already feature in other product groups. This is because overlapping products in promoted product groups can cause bidding issues with your ads.

You can do this by using the Product group filter when you’re creating a new product group. This lets you select which products to exclude from your new product group based on which product groups they already appear in.

    • Click the chevron down icon next to Item ID, then select Product Group.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to Includes to select Excludes.
    • Click the chevron down icon next to Select or search filter to select which product groups to exclude.
  10. Click Apply filter and the filtered products will appear in a list below.
  11. Click Add filter to apply additional filters.
  12. Click Create product group.
Shopify collections on Pinterest

You can link your Shopify account to your Pinterest account to feature up to 30 of your Shopify collections as Pinterest product groups. Every 48 hours, we’ll sync up to 1,000 products in each of your Shopify collections to Pinterest as product groups.

If you make any changes to your collections on Shopify, they’ll be reflected on Pinterest after every sync. To edit or delete product groups synced from Shopify, you’ll be directed to the Shopify app.
