A product group is a collection of items from your catalogue that can be promoted with shopping ads.

You can create product groups manually. We’ll also auto-create and suggest product groups for you.

If you've linked your Shopify account to your Pinterest account, we'll automatically sync your Shopify collections to Pinterest as product groups. This means you do not have to create additional product groups on Pinterest and you can start promoting shopping ads straight away.

In addition, you can review your product groups’ analytics to see how they’re performing and decide which ones to promote.

Note: Products that are not in stock will not be promoted in ads. Make sure your feed is always up to date so that information about your products’ availability is accurate.

Before you get started

Before you create product groups, you need to Add your data source.

Create product groups

Group similar products together by availability, brands, category, condition, custom label, gender, item ID, item group ID, price or product type.

To use a specific filter, make sure that the corresponding fields exist and are populated in your data source. If, for example, the product_type field does not exist in your data source, the product type filter will not be available. If the field exists in your data source but is not populated, you will not be able to create product groups using these filters.

Make sure you create product groups using filters that will always be in your data source. For example, if you create a product group using the brand filter and later remove the brand field from your data source, that product group will have a product count of zero.

Name your product groups based on the filters you select. For example, if you select 'Dresses' as the product type and 'Bestsellers' as the custom label, name your product group 'Bestselling dresses'. Remember that people on Pinterest will be able to see this name.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account from your desktop.
  2. Click Ads at the top of your screen, then click Catalogues.
  3. Select View product groups, then click Create product group.
  4. Click the directional chevron down icon to the right of Filters.

    • Click the directional chevron down icon next to Select or search filter to select which products to include or exclude from your filter.

  7. Click Add filter + to apply additional filters.
  8. Click Next step in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
  9. Enter a name for your product group and click Done.
Auto-created product groups

We’ll create some product groups automatically for you. These product groups will say 'Auto-created for you' below the product group name. You can choose to promote them as shopping ads. If you want to edit an auto-created product group, you have to duplicate it first and make changes to the duplicate version.

At the moment, the set of automatically created product groups is limited to the following six and is updated offline on a daily basis. For each product group (except All Products), we limit the result set to only 1,000 products.

Product group Summary
All products Consists of every product in your latest successful feed upload
Top sellers Consists of products with the highest conversion rate, if you have the conversion tag installed

Review your product group analytics

Review your analytics to see how your product group has performed over the last 30 days on Pinterest. This information can help you decide which product group to promote or feature. Note: This data can take up to 48 hours to update.

The displayed metrics include data from all Pins that are associated with these particular items in the product group. For example, if someone saves your product as a Pin from your website, the data for that Pin will also be reflected in the metrics.

The percentages displayed next to the numbers represent a 30-day comparison. For example, if you’re viewing your metrics on 2 November, the percentages will reflect a comparison between 2 October – 2 November, and 2 September – 2 October. This means you can tell whether your metrics have increased or decreased since the previous 30 days.

Bear in mind that if you move an item to a different product group, the previous data for that item will not be displayed in the new product group. View the metrics of the product group the item was previously in to see its data up until the date you moved it.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account from your desktop
  2. Click Ads at the top of your screen, then click Catalogues
  3. Click View product groups next to the feed you want to review

You’ll see the Average order value and Checkouts for the last 30 days next to each product group.

To review different metrics across smaller timeframes, follow these steps:

  1. Click Metrics settings in the top right-hand corner above your product groups
  2. Click the directional chevron down icon next to Show metrics from: to select a time range
  3. Click the boxes next to the selected metrics to deselect them
  4. Click the boxes next to the metrics that you want to review
    • Click the directional chevron down icon next to Metrics information to see definitions of each available metric
    • Click the directional chevron down icon next to Disclaimers on data to learn more about about product group data
    • Click View analytics to open your Analytics Overview page
  5. Click Save
