No longer seeing the option to create an Idea Pin? We recently announced changes to the way you make Pins, bringing together all the best creation features in one simple flow.

You can use Idea Pins to record multiple videos, add images, lists and custom text in a single Pin. Like other Pins, Idea Pins will stay on your boards once you’ve published them. Once you’ve published at least one Idea Pin, the Pin will be displayed on your profile at the top of your Created tab along with all of your Idea Pins.

You can use Idea Pins to:

  • Create a step-by-step guide, project or recipe
  • Upload multiple short videos with additional descriptive text or text overlay
  • Customize the colors and fonts in your Pin
  • Improve your targeting with topic tagging
  • Curate a collection of products
  • Tell a story in a new way
  • Before you get started

Here's what to do before you create an Idea Pin:

Review the Creator Code and follow guidelines

You’ll need to adhere to the Creator Code to create Idea Pins. The Creator Code is a pledge to create Idea Pins that follow our community guidelines. If an Idea Pin violates our guidelines, you may lose access to create Idea Pins.

If you repeat the same action too many times a temporary block may automatically be put on your account if we notice that you've repeatedly done the same action in a short period of time. This is to prevent spam on Pinterest and to keep Pins working properly.

Free up space on your device

You can create an Idea Pin and save it as a draft to come back and publish at a later time. You’ll need 100MB of storage space available on your mobile device to create a new Idea Pin draft, but you can save unlimited drafts on your desktop. If you’re low on storage space to save Idea Pin drafts, you’ll need to free up space on your mobile device by deleting files, pictures or apps. Without enough storage space, you will not be able to create Idea Pins.

Additionally, you cannot edit your drafts across different devices.

    Allow downloads and sharing

You can choose to allow people who view your Idea Pins to download the Pin to their mobile device or share it to their social networks. The downloaded Idea Pin will feature a watermark with your username. If you want people to be able to download your Idea Pins, you will have to turn this option on. This option will be turned off by default.

From your profile, tap the ellipsis icon then tap Settings. Tap Social permissions then toggle the switch next to Idea Pin downloads to turn the option on or off. This will apply to all of your published Idea Pins.

You can save your Idea Pins as drafts if you're not quite ready to publish.

To publish a draft, follow the steps to create an Idea Pin and instead of selecting a new image or video, look for the Your drafts tab or  the folder icon  (located in the bottom-right corner).

Here are a few key things to know about drafts:

  • You need at least 100MB of storage space available on your mobile device to create a new draft, but you can save unlimited drafts on your desktop.
  • Drafts expire 30 days after you've first stored them. After 30 days, you will be unable to retrieve them.
  • You cannot edit drafts across different devices. If you start creating an Idea Pin on your phone using the Pinterest app, you need to finish creating it there.
