Ad groups are the middle level between campaigns and ads in the Campaign structure. You set the targeting, run dates, bid and budget for all of the ads housed within an ad group. If you’re running a campaign with the consideration objective, you’ll set your budget at the campaign level rather than at the ad-group level. You can create a new ad group, edit an ad group, duplicate an existing ad group or remove an ad group.

If you want to set up similar but slightly different targeting for multiple sets of ads in your campaign, you can create a campaign with multiple ad groups.

Create a new ad group

Create single or multiple ad groups to house the ads that you want to run on Pinterest. You can create single or multiple ad groups in a new campaign or an existing campaign. You can add up to ten ad groups at a time.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Create campaign
  4. Click Manual campaign, then Get started
  5. Under Choose a campaign objective, select a goal
  6. Enter your campaign details
  7. Click Continue to create your campaign and move on to create your ad groups
  8. Under Ad group details, give your ad group a name
    • To create multiple ad groups, click + New ad group
  9. Select your Targeting
    • To target a specific audience, click Create new audience
    • To automatically expand selected interests and keywords based on your Pin, tick the box next to Use your Pin to expand your targeting
  10. Select your Budget & schedule (the budget type can’t be edited once the ad group has been created)
    • To set a max amount you’d like to spend each day, select Daily budget
    • To set the amount you’d like to spend over the course of your campaign, select Lifetime budget
  11. Select your Optimisation & delivery
    • To have Pinterest automatically get the most clicks for your budget, select Automatic (Note: automatic bidding is available for consideration, conversion, brand awareness and catalog sales campaigns)
    • To control how much you bid, select Custom
  12. Select your Ads
  13. Review your information
  14. Click Publish
  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account.
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Reporting
  4. Tick the box next to the campaign you want to add an ad group to, then click Edit above the reporting table.
  5. From the left-hand side navigation, click + New ad group.
  6. Under Ad group details give your ad group a name.
  7. Select your Targeting.
    • To target a specific audience, click Create new audience.
    • To automatically expand selected interests and keywords based on your Pin, tick the box next to Use your Pin to expand your targeting.
  8. Select your budget and schedule. The budget type can’t be edited once the ad group has been created. If you’re running a campaign with the consideration objective, you’ll set your budget at the campaign level rather than at the ad group level.
    • To set a max amount you’d like to spend each day, select Daily budget.
    • To set an amount you’d like to spend over the course of your campaign, select Lifetime budget.
  9. Select your Optimisation & delivery.
    • To have Pinterest automatically get the most clicks for your budget, select Automatic. (Automatic bidding is available for consideration, conversion, brand awareness and catalogue sales campaigns.)
    • To control how much you bid, select Custom.
  10. Select your Ads.
  11. Review your information.
  12. Click Publish.

For campaigns optimising for consideration, you can optimise for Pin clicks or outbound clicks in either your consideration or catalogue sales campaigns. Both help you find your target audience on Pinterest, but offer slightly different outcomes.

  • Optimising for Pin clicks helps you focus on increasing your audience’s engagement on Pinterest, as Pin clicks signify user interest in an ad. Pin clicks can result in a share, save or outbound click.
  • Optimising for outbound clicks narrows your focus to people in your target audience who are likely to navigate to your website. Outbound clicks signify that the user wants to learn more about a product or brand from the advertiser directly.

Bear in mind that, within the same campaign, you can optimise for Pin clicks or outbound clicks, not both. If you choose to optimise for outbound clicks, you must also select automatic bidding. And whether you choose Pin clicks or outbound clicks, you will be billed on Pin click. Learn more about how billing works.

Edit an ad group

Make adjustments to an ad group that you’ve already created.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Reporting
  4. At the top of the reporting table, click Ad groups
  5. In the reporting table, tick the box next to the ad group you want to edit and click Edit above the reporting table
  6. Update your ad group information
  7. Click Save edits
Duplicate an ad group

Duplicate an ad group to copy and edit information from an ad group that you’ve already created. You can duplicate an ad group while creating a new campaign or while updating an existing campaign.

When duplicating an ad group to a new campaign, you can edit at the campaign, ad group and ad levels. When duplicating an ad group to an existing campaign, you can edit at the ad group and ad levels.

You can add up to ten ad groups to one campaign at a time. When you duplicate an ad group, the highest number in the drop-down reflects how many duplicates of your ad groups you can still add to a campaign.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Create campaign
  4. Click Manual campaign, then Get started
  5. Under Choose a campaign objective, select a goal
  6. Enter your campaign details
  7. Click Continue to create your campaign and move on to create your ad groups
  8. Set up the ad group you want to duplicate by filling in your Ad group details, Targeting, Budget & schedule, Optimisation & delivery, and your Ads
  9. Once you’re ready to duplicate, from the left-hand side navigation, click Duplicate ad group
  10. Select the number of duplicate ad groups you want to create, then click Duplicate
  11. Update your ad group information
  12. Click Publish
  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Reporting
  4. At the top of the reporting table, click Ad groups
  5. In the reporting table, tick the box next to the ad group you want to duplicate and click Duplicate above the reporting table
  6. Select whether you want to duplicate the ad group to the same campaign, a different campaign or a new campaign and how many copies you’d like to make, then click Duplicate
  7. Update your ad group information
  8. Click Review copies
  9. Click Create ad groups
Remove an ad group

Delete single or multiple ad groups in a new campaign or an existing campaign. You need to have at least one ad group per campaign. You can’t delete the last ad group in a campaign.

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account
  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Create campaign
  4. Click Manual campaign, then Get started
  5. Select a goal and add your Campaign details, then click Continue
  6. Set up your ad group by filling in your Ad group details, Targeting, Budget & schedule, Optimisation & delivery, and your Ads
  7. To delete an ad group that you no longer want to include in your campaign, select the ad group from the left-hand side navigation, then click the bin icon

  2. Click on the collapsed menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the page
  3. Under Ads, click Reporting
  4. At the top of the reporting table, click Ad groups
  5. In the reporting table, tick the box next to the ad group you want to delete and click Archive above the reporting table
  6. In the pop-up, click Yes

Experiencing a problem?

If your campaign is missing any necessary information, errors will be highlighted in red in the left-hand side navigation. Click on the highlighted topics to jump to that section and fix any existing errors. The information that you enter will save as you move from step to step. If you exit the window before you click ‘Continue’, ‘Save edits’ or ‘Create campaigns’, your work will be lost.

Ad review process

Once you launch your campaign, we’ll review it to make sure it follows our Advertising guidelines. The campaign review process can take up to 24 hours.

If your campaign targeting goes against our advertising guidelines, we’ll send you a notification in Ads Manager letting you know what needs to change so that your ad can be reviewed again for approval. Once it's been approved, we’ll start distributing your ad.
